ART 1050 - Intro to Photography

Reflection:

The final assignment for this course was one where we had to photograph something we felt we appreciated, needed more appreciation, or needed change.  I selected something I appreciate and something with sentimental value.

As my subject I chose my  family cabin.  A place where many childhood memories had been made, where I learned to drive, and a place my wife and I have loved to visit to 'get away'.  Unfortunately my family has decided to try and sell the cabin and I felt that this project would be a great opportunity to photograph this place and help retain many of the memories.

These thoughts and feelings, in hind sight, put a great deal of pressure on my skills to produce great works of art.  A great deal of my shots I feel fell extremely short of my expectations.  At the end of it all I find myself hoping that the cabin does not sell right away, or at all if I had my choice, so that at the very least I will be able to return with my camera and get more shots of this beloved place.

This photography course provided me a way to practice many of the things I had learned on my own by playing with my camera (a Nikon D3100).  It also taught me things about photography that I had not yet thought of and ways to master and manipulate light.  Among these things were guidelines of composition, aside from the "rule" of thirds which I am certain every amature photographer has heard of.

By combining my new knowledge, new skills, and my practiced skills (along with some new equipment, like a tripod and shutter release cable) I was able to produce several images which capture the comfort that this refuge from "city life" holds.

Below this reflection are seven photos from the cabin shoot.  The first is of the cabin itself.  It is shot through the trees to illustrate the seclusion offered.  The second shot is of a sign hanging near the front door.  Yes this cabin was build by my grandparents and within are all the comforts you would expect at Grandma and Grandpa's house.  The third and fourth photos are scenic and are scenes that can be found at and around the cabin.  The final three shots are sequential, though they were not taken in burst.  I include them as a demonstration of freezing and showing action.
